Vital information for college students AND their parents

This book DOES list a variety of programs which can be utilized to delay or discharge student loans, but most involve training for health care or teaching careers (which may not be your field of choice) and then taking jobs in under-served areas. The other route is joining the military, which is not an option for all. Even after reading about all the programs out there, I'm not convinced that getting out of student debt is EVER easy or painless and the author is not really saying that it is.The greatest value of this book is the comprehensive discussion of student loans. The author describes the different types and the advantages and disadvantages of each. The point he makes over and over is that signing up for ANY student loan is a serious business and one which should not be taken lightly. Unless you qualify for one of the forgiveness programs, the money must be paid back (with interest) whether it's convenient or not. It CANNOT be discharged through bankruptcy. (Read the small print!)The time to read this book is BEFORE you sign on the dotted line. There are still ways to go to college without going into debt. Start at a junior college, live at home, ride the bus, work part time, shop at thrift stores, and keep the partying to a minimum. Sadly, many college students today take on huge debt in order to finance a lifestyle that they won't be able to afford once they graduate and start paying back those loans! Live it up now; pay later. Sounds like a lousy plan to me.

Basically if you volunteer as a doctor, nurse or lawyer, you can get some of your student loan paid for. If you didn't major in the professions listed in this book you're SOL. Book seems pretty thorough overall.
