Consequences And The Seriousness of Student Loan Usage
By Stella Carrier
I must preface this review by admitting that I was curious to watch this documentary because Default: The Student Loan Documentary hit home for me due to both my husband and I carrying student loans. However, we both are not complaining about having to pay back the student loans, and are determined to pay them within a ten to twenty year timeframe (at the latest). I also came across an article about a woman (in her 50's) who bravely confessed how much she owed in student loans. Yes, I know that there are also millions of men and women who have wisely already avoided/avoid student loans and/or were able to successfully repay their student loans back in a short time frame. However, watching this documentary made me aware that countless other people across the country are also dealing with the student loan issue. The following are some of the facts covered in this documentary:The average pell grant at many universities covers the cost of books.Around 2009 (when this documentary aired),Corinthian Colleges (a for profit company) told investors that they were going to make 130 million dollars of their own private loans, and that in a fiscal year they expected the student loan defaults to climb to at least 58%.The obvious fact that the student loan industry wields large power in our political system was also brought up.Allan Collinge (founder of Student Loan Justice), Tamara Draught (Demos Vice President of Policy and Programs), Jeff Blum (executive director of USAction), Anya Kamenetz (author of Generation Debt, writer and journalist), Carmen Berkley President Of The United States Student Associate (2007-2009) and Gregory Cendana (current president of the Student Associate), Robert Applebaum (started an essay on facebook called Forgive Student Loan Debt)The websites of studentloanjusticedotorg and defaulmoviedotcom were mentionedLast, but not least, (some of the dramatic student loan balances mentioned in the film):One woman took out thirty thousand dollars in student loans, but her balance in student loans is now ninety thousand.A male in the documentary recounted how his student loan balance was $46,000 dollars in 2004. At the time of the documentary (2009), his student loan balance grew to $122,000. Another woman bravely recounted (in the documentary) that she at least succeeded in paying $26,000 of the $35,000 initial student loan balance. However she implied that interest charges probably contributed to why she still owes $57,000 dollars.Carmen Berkley courageously admitted to owing $80,000 dollars in student loan debt. She mentioned that one of the reasons for sharing her story and doing what she does was to eventually help to decrease the number of future college students going through what she was subjected to.Another male admitted to owing at least $200,000 dollars in student loans and admitted (with heart-wrenching sadness) that he had to tell a woman that he truly loved that he could not take their relationship to the "next level" due to his student loan debt. Obviously, it is implied that he probably would have married and possibly had children with this woman (whom he expressed true love for) if it was not for his $200,000 in student loans.

student loan
By M. Malone
The documentary wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. I am one of the millions that has a loan and no way of paying it off. Even though the economy has tanked, the penalty and assessments keep on coming. The information was okay for what it was.

Student loan bubble- 'Default Movie' tells the whole story...
By Amazon Lady
Every one in the US should read this book. The current student lending system invites profiteering on behalf of the banks. And, because there are no consumer protections, a predatory lending system erupted. The default rate for private loans is so high because people simply can't afford to pay the inflated amount of the loan. Virtually every private loan is double what it originally was. If you miss three payments, due to illness, or unemployment, a private student loan will default automatically. If the loan defaults, it gains another 25%. We need consumer protections to be returned to the students who borrowed these predatory loans. It is also true that student debtors with private loans aren't 'feeding the economic machine'. They are not buying houses, cars, or contributing to a 401K, etc. Many student debtors are in their 50's or 60's.Sallie Mae was giving students loans at an interest rate of 12% plus libor. The largest private student lender, Sallie Mae, relaxed their underwriting requirements to provide loans to students (against the SEC rules)- this is exactly what happened in the mortgage crisis. These PRIVATE LOANS HAVE NOW BALLOONED TO TWICE OR THREE TIMES THEIR ORIGINAL VALUE. Sallie Mae also pushed all delinquent private loans into forbearance to hide the delinquencies. This company is corrupt. This is crippling the economy even further. And, Al Lord, CEO of Sallie Mae- is increasing his wealth from predatory loans.
